GLS AUCTION: Not just another fundraiser

Since I was asked to Chair this year’s school auction I have learned a lot. I have learned that there are a million moving parts to this event. I have learned that we have amazing, talented volunteers at GLS willing to give their time and skills. I have also learned what a VITAL fundraiser this is for our students.

I have attended the auction as a parent (Ella 1st grade, Jackson Pre-k) for the past several years. Prior to serving in this capacity I saw it as a fun date night with my husband. A good excuse to hang out with friends and perhaps even walk away with a deal or two. I was off in a few ways.

Without the school auction your child’s education could look dramatically different. The auction allows the school to purchase important curriculum materials. These materials combined with our amazing teachers, keep our students learning often grade levels ahead of public school students.

Curriculum, I know it’s not very sexy, but without the auction, these materials would still need to be purchased. Difficult decisions would have to be made; do they purchase a lesser quality curriculum or perhaps raise tuition or include a new fee?

This year our auction will help the school raise funds for our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiatives. This is more important than ever as 65% of the fastest growing job markets are STEM related and that percentage is expected to grow. The money you donate will provide our students with a new math curriculum that will ensure our 8th graders are ahead of the curve when they reach high school, with basic algebra already under their belts. It will also allow us to purchase new science equipment for a cutting edge lab for our future scientists.
New basketball courts and playground equipment are also on the wish list. Items that are much needed on our campus.

Gethsemane Lutheran Church’s main mission is our school. I don’t have to tell you that.
I am a parent at GLS, I am also a member of the church and an elected member of the Mission Directors team.
I know over the years the church has given a lot to its school and our members continue to do so.
I also know that this main mission of Gethsemane Lutheran Church, is working!!

Many of our students attend GLS for our great education and small class sizes. They may not have church homes or attend church regularly, but they learn about God’s love everyday at school. They learn what it means to give back to their community. They understand what it means to treat their neighbor as their brother or sister.
God is working through GLS and through these children. We are making a difference and our auction is helping make that possible.

If you are on the fence about attending, please pray about it. Our auction is a wonderful opportunity for the Church and School to come together for a common cause.
Remember when you do attend, you’re not there to get a deal, you’re there to make a difference. Whether it’s $50 or $1,000 everything counts and there are items and opportunities at a variety of levels.

I pray I will see you there.

God Bless,
